Rafa Benitez is widely expected to leave Napoli at the end of the campaign.

The Spaniard was a decent success in his first season at the Italian club. Since then, results have been disappointing. The club are on course to dropping out of the Champions League next season. This will be a major negative aspects for the club in their hopes of attracting top names while also keeping players like Marek Hamsik and Gonzalo Higuain. The presence of Benitez was a major factor in players like Higuain arriving at the club. Despite the poor form, Napoli have shown their desire to keep the Spaniard beyond the current contract.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool manager was recently offered a three-year contract extension but it was turned down. This has sparked rumours that he is all set to leave the club at the end of the campaign. A return to the Premier League is possibly on the cards. His last job in the English league was at Chelsea which ended in a shock success in the Europa League. Even though the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool may not be considering a managerial change, Benitez may get a lucky break in the form of a job at Manchester City. The current poor form of City could lead to Manuel Pellegrini being sacked.

“I think he’d love to come back. I think he’s really enjoyed his time here and he’s got a connection with Liverpool. When I was working with the FA and spent a day with him, he really opened his books for me – probably more so than any other manager. He showed me everything at Liverpool like the scouting,” said former England under 21 boss Stuart Pearce when asked about the possibility of Benitez being brought back to English football.

Benitez says that a 2-0 win for Napoli in the second leg is not out of possibility. He says that the Italian outfit wanted to be defensively solid, but it was not possible in the first half. However, the improved much better in the second half, but the goal from Martinez in the 57th minute was definitely a major setback for the team. He says that the home advantage in the second leg will certainly provide Napoli with confidence that they can go through. The club will be shifting their focus towards this match after falling out of the title race in Italian Serie A.

They have almost sealed up the third place, which will guarantee them Champions League football next season.
“One-nil is a bad result for us, but we can win 2-0 at the San Paolo. Our idea was to do well defensively and start creating dangers as well. We did not do this at first but in the second half we were able to do it and we could have scored a goal. I saw a couple of situations in the first half when we had to be more precise and do damage. Playing the second leg at our home stadium can make a difference, but Porto are strong in attack which can make the difference, too,” said Benitez.
